The Value of Inflammatory Signals in Adaptive Immune Responses

چکیده
Cells of the immune system must search among billions of healthy cells in order to find and neutralize a small number of infected cells before pathogens replicate to sufficient numbers to cause disease or death. The immune system uses information signals to accomplish this search quickly. Here we use a computationally tractable and scalable differential equation model and a spatially explicit agent based model to determine how much the information in capillary inflammation decreases the time taken by the first CTL to find infected cells, increases the number of CTLs by day 5 post activation in infected tissue and decreases the number of infected cells at day 5. We find that the inflammation signal localized in a small region of infected tissue significantly reduces search times. We suggest that simple models of infection and immune response can reveal the role of local information signals in improving

Killer Cell Immunoglobulin-Like Receptors Influence the Innate and Adaptive Immune Responses
Natural killer (NK) cells are a subset of lymphocytes which play a crucial role in early innate immune response against infection and tumor transformation. Furthermore, they secrete interferon-γ (IFN-γ) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) prompting adaptive immu-nity. NK cells distinguish the unhealthy cells from the healthy ones through an array of cell-surface receptors. Human NK cells use inhibi...
متن کاملCan Allergic Disorders Decrease the Risk of Thromboembolic Events in Atherosclerosis? an Evidence-based Review
Atherosclerosis is a complex inflammatory disorder of the medium and large-sized arteries. Recent experiments demonstrated that atherosclerosis is a Th1 dominant autoimmune condition, whereas Th2 cells are rarely detected within the atherosclerotic lesions. Several studies have indicated that Th2 type cytokines could be effective in the reduction and stabilization of atherosclerotic plaque. The...
متن کاملDendritic Cells and Their Role in Cancer Immunotherapy
Dendritic cells (DCs) are antigen presenting cells with unique capability to take up and process antigens in the peripheral blood and tissues. They subsequently migrate to draining lymph nodes where they present these antigens and stimulate naive T lympho-cytes. During their life cycle, DCs go through two maturation stages and are referred to as immature and mature cells, respectively. While im...
متن کاملA new insight into viral proteins as Immunomodulatory therapeutic agents. KSHV vOX2 a homolog of human CD200 as a potent anti-inflammatory protein
The physiologic function of the immune system is defense against infectious microbes and internal tumour cells, Therefore, need to have precise modulatory mechanisms to maintain the body homeostasis. The mammalian cellular CD200 (OX2)/CD200R interaction is one of such modulatory mechanisms in which myeloid and lymphoid cells are regulated. CD200 and CD200R molecules are membrane proteins that t...
متن کاملPlasmacytoid dendritic cells in angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia
Background: Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE) is characterized by irregularly-shaped blood vessels with an inflammatory infiltrate. While absent from normal skin, plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) infiltrate the skin upon injury and during several infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic entities. In addition to providing anti-viral resistance, pDCs link the innate and adapti...
